Operation Christmas Child Update

26 11 2008

Yesterday 17 of us traveled up to Santa Ana, California to the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Processing Center to volunteer with pre-sorting the gifts that were donated by so many churches in Southern California. There were thousands of boxes to sort through and so little time.  We started off with registration and orientation where we watched a short video about the many ministries of Samaritan’s Purse. Then we were trained on how to pre-sort and sort the boxes. Each box goes through Pre-sorting first, where the box is opened up and any money inside the box is removed and collected for shipping costs. Then they are stacked on pallets according to age group and wheeled away to the sorting lines. At the sorting lines the boxes are opened up again and checked for any inappropriate items such as liquids, weapons, money, etc. Then they are placed in boxes according to age group and gender. They are then sent to another line to be sealed, boxed, and prepared for shipping all over the world. The boxes which we were sorting were going to children in countries such as China, The Philippines, and Guiana. Once the process was explained to us we were put right to work at the pre-sorting station. It was a good experience for all of us and it really made Operation Christmas Child come alive for us.
